Pauline has been at Barty House for nearly 2 years now. She previously worked as a carer in the Community as well as several other jobs, but really wanted to get back into care – her husband encouraged her and she applied for the job, got it, and has loved it ever since.
Pauline says the best thing about the job is getting to know the residents, looking after them and making them laugh. “I quite often do silly things to bring a bit of brightness into their lives and I feel I am doing some good looking after them.”
A while ago we had an Elvis impersonator in and Pauline went down to the laundry and got a pair of big knickers and threw them at him, the residents roared with laughter. The residents make her laugh as much as I make them laugh and she quite often burst into spontaneous song!
Pauline says “When they see me in the morning after a couple of days off they call out ‘hello love; haven’t seen you for a while and glad you are back”. I am always thinking about them even when I am not here. I love the job.”
She also goes along on the Oomph trips when she can, The residents really enjoy them. Pauline also takes one of the residents out with her husband every few months, where they all enjoy some lunch in the local area.
Pauline has three children, the eldest is a teacher at a primary school and the youngest is just starting her GCSE’s. Outside of work, Pauline spends time with her granddaughter who is 2 and a half – “I love her to pieces and we have great fun.”
She also loves to cook anything and everything, her mother was a lousy cook and she vowed she would never be like that. Her husband thinks she should put together her own cookery book. Sometimes she concocts things and he asks what it is called so she gives them a name and he loves it. She did have a recipe published in a Tesco magazine once. Pauline always makes her own sauces and her husbands favourite meal is either a roast or a curry!
Pauline likes walking her dog, Reg, a miniature schnauzer, Reg comes into the home from time to time and he won the dog with the waggiest tail at the homes dog show recently! One resident, in particular, looks forward to Reg’s visits and loves to walk him in the grounds. Pauline also brings her granddaughter in occasionally and the residents love her as well.
