Congratulations to the emissaries of Barty who  recently took part in a raft race in a bid to win one of three trophies at stake, and more importantly, to raise money for Heart of Kent Hospice charity.

Organised by volunteers as part of the Maidstone River Festival, the Raft Race saw 12 teams competing in a fun, yet competitive atmosphere, while simultaneously representing their respective homes.

Barty did an excellent job coming in sixth place, despite late setbacks and being a couple of people short before the race, but that didn’t stop the team from finding new members and competing all the same!

This was all thanks to the efforts of home manager David Willis and care assistant Marcus, night nurse Gabor and Gabor’s daughter, and Alison , our lovely resident Peggy’s daughter-in-law, for making up the team (while braving the cold water!), and our head of activities Laura Tierney’s Uncle Dean who provided the transport to and from the event. Clever Uncle Dean also built the raft!

On the day, the team were enthusiastically supported by staff, their families and families of residents.

The support for Barty was strong and no doubt helped spur the team to their very creditable sixth place finish and aided their efforts to drum up over £250 for Heart of Kent Hospice.

A massive thank you is also owed to Stephen Paine for organising the event, and even keeping the Barty raft from being stolen again after an unceremonious theft by some ‘little toe rags’ looking for a joyride!.
