Resident Bert was born in Wales in 1923 and grew up speaking the Welsh language. He learned English at school alongside his school friends. Throughout Bert’s distinguished career as a police detective in England, his Welsh language skills were little used.

On a sunny Saturday afternoon Steve Ranner came to Barty House to visit his mother, Meg, another resident at Barty House. Steve is a teacher in Wales and we were keen to get Bert and Steve together for a little chat! It was a beautiful day and Bert and Steve met on the decking under the shade of a parasol. Steve greeted Bert in Welsh and Bert responded in kind. After that, they were off! It was so moving and heartwarming to see Bert using the language of his childhood. He was smiling and chatting away, as easily as if he were talking to a friend at school all those years ago!

Steve and his wife, Julie, were delighted to engage Bert in a Welsh conversation and we would very much like to extend our thanks to them for their part in this wonderful moment!
