Purpose

The job holder assists with the recreational, therapeutic and social aspects of all the residents’ activities inside and outside of the home. He or she also helps with the promotion of the home, ensuring that members of the local community are aware of the positive and therapeutic aspects of the activities being provided.

What does the role involve?

In a typical day, the activities assistant supports the head of activities and the rest of the team to provide enjoyable and meaningful activities to residents, helping to maximise their quality of life and wellbeing.

A big part of the role is to Interact with each resident during the activity and support them to get the best out of the experience, whether they are engaged in arts and crafts, decorating cakes, playing a musical instrument or simply enjoying afternoon tea. We encourage them to participate as much as they want, bearing in mind their individual likes, dislikes and interests, and we also encourage and help them to pursue a favourite hobby.

Many activities take place in a group setting, but frequently the activities assistant takes that day’s activity to residents who prefer to stay in their room or remain in bed. This may be a hand massage, a cup of tea and a chat or simply supporting them to call loved ones.

The activities assistant also helps the head of activities to invite and organise visits from outside entertainers such as singers, visiting pet therapists and friendly dogs. Our residents really love singing and dancing, too, so even
